SARPEP (Rapid Learning System for First Episode Psychosis Programs)

The importance of a transition from adolescence to adulthood

In Quebec, people under the age of 18 are treated in pediatric hospitals. However, when patients reach adulthood, they find themselves destitute and without support, which can be dramatic in terms of mental health. To guarantee the transition, ensure continuous monitoring, and offer stability to these young people, programs for first psychotic episodes are accessible from the age of 14. The establishment of a learning system responds to a “real” need and will help transform mental health services for young people in Quebec. SARPEP will enable more consistent mental health care, giving all young people in the province an equal opportunity to recover.  SARPEP ensures a better quality of care and supports teams in their interventions, thus guaranteeing optimal support for people with first episode psychosis.  Its goal is to improve the quality of care by detecting the disease and intervening effectively as early as possible to avoid the deterioration of the mental health and the social, family and professional functioning of young patients.
